-VERTICAL** brings together Olavo de Carvalho and Wolfgang Smith in a meeting that could not happen in their lifetime-and turns that impossibility into a form of presence. The film is not a "debate" meant to win arguments; it is an **alert**. An alert about what operates behind ideas, about what quietly shapes the collective consciousness, and about how modern man-often without noticing-can surrender ground to deception. Rather than delivering a sermon, VERTICAL returns to the viewer a **criterion of vigilance**: to learn how to see what is real, recognize the disguise, and not surrender one's soul to the wrong side. Carvalho and Smith, side by side for the first time, identify an enemy that rarely shows itself as an enemy: **scientism**. It is not science-it is a territorial takeover wearing the mask of neutrality. It replaces legitimate inquiry with dogma dressed up as method; it trades reality for what can be measured; it impoverishes the world down to what can be quantified, as if whatever does not fit a ruler does not exist. The consequence is not merely intellectual-it is interior. By reducing reality, scientism reduces man, weakens his defenses, dulls his perception, and opens a vacuum where other forces advance. It is on this terrain that the film exposes the rise of **neo-gnosticism**-an inverted metaphysics that tries to replace creation with a mental construct, a manufactured "worldview." The dispute, then, is no longer only about theories: it becomes a dispute over reality itself and over the human capacity to remain standing before it. In four movements, VERTICAL sets history back on its proper axis: **authentic science** is not a modern invention, nor is it inaugurated by the Enlightenment as if everything before were darkness. It has roots in the classical tradition, depends on categories higher than number, and can endure only when it recognizes what grounds it: form, end, the hierarchy of being-in other words, **metaphysics**. That is why VERTICAL unfolds as a progression: from data to meaning, from surface to foundation, from intellectual comfort to spiritual sobriety. In the end, the film does not close on "opinion" or rhetoric. It closes as a summons: **keep watch**. Because when reality is replaced by a model, the first thing domesticated is the eye-and when the eye falls, everything else falls with it.
