Black Cake

After the death of her mother, Sherry Sankar lives a quiet, routine life in Queens, New York, clinging to the comfort of order and tradition. On Christmas Day, her younger sister Meena arrives unannounced, bringing home memories Sherry has tried to bury. The sisters haven't spoken in months, and tension fills the house that once belonged to their mother-a space now cluttered with unspoken grief and the echoes of their Indo-Caribbean upbringing. When Meena insists they sell the house, Sherry resists. Every corner reminds her of their mother-the smell of rum, the sound of chutney music, the rhythm of holiday cooking, the warmth of community gatherings that once filled the walls. Meena, frustrated, searches the kitchen for the black cake their mother always made for Christmas. Instead, she discovers an envelope hidden among old recipes. Inside are letters and a photograph that reveal a part of their mother's past she never spoke about-her early life in Trinidad, a lost love, and the sacrifices she made to give her daughters a future in America. The revelation forces the sisters to confront their mother's legacy and their own fractured relationship. As they bake together for the first time since her passing, memories and secrets blend with the scent of spices and sugar. By night's end, the women find quiet reconciliation in shared laughter, tears, and a renewed understanding of the love that shaped them-and the new traditions they will carry forward. Black Cake is a story about grief, heritage, sisterhood, and the sweetness of forgiveness that lingers long after loss.
